Edward Higgins was the first road foreman in the Bridge Lake area where he established many of the local road routes. His last achievement, and one which gave him the greatest satisfaction, was establishing the route of the Canim Lake road by walking the area and blazing the trees. He then oversaw the building of the road from Judson corner to the McNeil ranch, now known at the Mahood Lake Road. That road still follows the exact route established by Ed Higgins in the early nineteen forties. Ed Higgins passed away in the fall of 1974 at the age of 95. He is fondly remembered by all who knew him, not only as a good man, but as one of the Cariboo’s greatest pioneers.

From 1860 to 1864, John and Oliver Jeffereys drove thousands of head of long-horn cattle from Arkansas through Oregon to the Cariboo. Ideal grazing lands and the opportunity to provide meat and supplies to fur traders and later, Cariboo Gold rush miners, led the brothers to settle here. The Jeffereys brothers purchased a stopping house and are recorded to have established a toll bridge across the creek, now named Bridge Creek. Their property, known as 100 Mile Roadhouse, was operated by the Jeffereys brothers until 1864, when it was sold to Uriah Nelson. (source: BC Provincial Archives)
